How to Scan Product Barcodes into Documentation

Scan the barcode on a vaccine box or medication to fill in key details automatically.

Written by Albert Lam

Overview

When documenting a vaccination service, you can avoid manually typing key product details by scanning the product box instead which will automatically fill in these fields:

  • Product name

  • Manufacturer

  • Lot number

  • Expiry date

Note: Depending on the product, not all fields are filled automatically.

Barcode scanning works in:

  • The documentation form for a single appointment

  • Batch Update, when documenting several appointments at once

What you'll need

  • In your pharmacy: A 2D barcode scanner. Scanning uses the square "DataMatrix" barcode on the box, not the straight-line barcode. Most 2D scanners work right out of the box.

  • In MedMe: A documentation form with a barcode field. Look for a field that says "Scan Barcode" or "Scan or enter a value, then press Enter" with a scanner icon. If you don't see it, your form isn't set up for scanning yet. Contact MedMe Support.

How to scan a barcode

  1. Open the appointment's documentation form, or open Batch Update.

  2. Click into the barcode field.

  3. Scan the square barcode on the product box.

  4. The matching fields fill in automatically and are briefly highlighted in green.

  5. Check the filled-in details against the box, then finish the rest of the form as usual.

In some cases, you will need to fill in some product details yourself.

💡 Tip: Scanning won't submit or skip ahead in the form, so you can scan as soon as you open the Documentation.

No scanner? Type the value instead

  1. Type the barcode value into the barcode field.

  2. Press Enter.

Or skip the barcode field and fill in the relevant fields yourself.
